NYT Magazine: TV cooking shows

Thursday, July 30th, 2009

This Sunday’s New York Times Magazine has a cover story by Michael Pollan. The topic? Television cooking shows. Pollan’s article, “Out of the Kitchen, Onto the Couch,” is accompanied by an interactive timeline where I trace  highlights of the genre over time. It’s like an amuse-bouche for Watching What We Eat. Enjoy!

The Joy of Julia Child

Can you feel it?

It’s impossible to walk a block here in NYC without coming face to face with Meryl Streep. She’s on bus shelter ads (as Julia Child) all over town, and it’s getting us all atwitter (and Facebook-y). The movie “Julie & Julia” opens a week from tomorrow and despite mixed reviews, it is sure to attract a large and drooling audience. Julia Child would surely be flabbergasted at the attention that she’s still getting more than four decades after the debut of “The French Chef.” Well-deserved, it is, for the woman who did so much to change the way we cook and eat in the U.S. of A.

I had a really nice interview with Boston University student Liza Katz a couple of weeks ago. Here’s the result on GoodEater.org, a great blog (co-edited by a vegetarian and a meat eater) that describes itself as “the hub for information and conversation on sustainable food.”
